Field Notes
How we read a trial balance before fieldwork begins
A clean trial balance is not a guarantee of clean ledgers, but it is the map we use to decide where to walk first. Before we set foot in a client’s office, we sort accounts by size, scan for unusual debit–credit flips, and compare suspense balances to the prior year.
What we look for early
Suspense and clearing accounts that never quite clear. Large round amounts posted near period-end. Related-party receivables that sit without aging. Inventory accounts that move while the physical count schedule is blank.
None of these items prove a misstatement. They tell us which vouchers to pull and which people to interview first.
A Gunma-specific habit
Many trading firms here still keep bilingual schedules for lenders. We ask for both the Japanese statutory trial balance and any English management pack. Differences between the two often hide cut-off adjustments made only for one audience.
If you are preparing for an annual statutory review, export the trial balance as of the balance-sheet date, lock it, and note every post-close entry. That single habit shortens our first week of fieldwork.
